Insight #1: Confidence, confidence, confidence: To improve yours, you need to understand it first

Confidence is a crucial part of understanding yourself and your career. There are many moving parts within the topic of confidence but a key thing to note is that confidence is multi-faceted. This matters because it affects how you best work on yours.

The terms ‘confidence’ and ‘self-confidence’ cover three related but distinct aspects:

Self-efficacy: how competent you feel in given situations or for a particular task. Studies show self-efficacy influences the tasks people choose, the goals they set for themselves, their level of effort, and their persistence. People with high self-efficacy generally work hard because they are confident that their efforts will be successful (Bandura and Lunenburg, 2011)

Self-esteem: how great you feel you are, how you evaluate yourself. It can fluctuate day to day, but people have a base level of self-esteem. Studies consistently show that people with high and low self-esteem adapt to events differently. High self-esteem is associated with higher optimism, risk taking, creativity and less conformity (Maxwell and & Bachkirova, 2010)

Self-worth: how worthy of love, happiness and respect you consider yourself. It is the most enduring and all-encompassing aspect. Research shows people with high self-worth tend to have more satisfying, loving, and stable relationships. Self-worth is highly subjective—being inferior and feeling inferior are two different things (positive psychology)

By taking the time to clarify which aspect you are working on you can access the right support. In general, self-efficacy is the easiest place to start, and can also provide a boost to your self esteem as you grow and succeed.
